The clinical diagnosis of C. pneumoniae and Chronic Fatigue is difficult due to the commonality of the symptoms. IGeneX offers ELISA as the preferred diagnostic testing method to help physicians accurately detect C. pneumoniae infection.
To learn more about Diagnostic Tests for C. pneumoniae and Chronic Fatigue, including symptoms and prevalence, please read IGeneX’s overview of Chronic Fatigue.
One of the causative agents of pneumoniae is an infection with the rod-shaped bacteria, Chlamydophila pneumoniae. This bacteria accounts for 10 percent of community-acquired pneumoniae in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 50 percent of people in the United States have evidence of past infection with C. pneumoniae by the age of 20. In addition to pneumoniae, infection with C. pneumoniae can less-commonly cause bronchitis, atherosclerosis, and COPD. Chlamydophila pneumoniae is also linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The diagnosis should be considered for patients with symptoms resembling Lyme or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that have tested negative for Lyme disease and Relapsing Fever Borreliosis. Diagnosing physicians should use clinical symptoms along with laboratory tests to determine if these patients have C. pneumoniae infection or a tick-borne infection.
