OVERVIEW OF COVID-19 SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has lifted most summer camp restrictions for counties in red, orange, or yellow tiers. However, it’s clear that widespread and accurate testing of campers will play a critical role in ensuring safety. Hikes, cook-outs, and learning activities are just a few of the times when potentially at-risk campers come together and viruses can be transmitted.
IGeneX is pleased to offer a SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT PCR test that detects the presence of the underlying virus that causes COVID-19. This type of test is considered the gold standard for COVID-19 testing.

Order Test(s) from IGeneX
IGeneX will provide test kits, as well as guidance on how to collect specimens and organize transportation of specimens to IGeneX.
Get Results
Results will be provided between 12-24 hours after receipt of samples. Results will be reported to County and State Health Departments where required.
WHICH CAMPERS SHOULD BE TESTED FOR COVID-19?
RECOMMENDATION: ALL CAMPERS
IGeneX recommends both symptomatic and asymptomatic people be tested for COVID-19.
- Symptomatic campers are those showing symptoms such as fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. If positive, the camper can be quarantined and treated before the disease spreads.
- Asymptomatic campers are those not showing symptoms, but who may be carrying the disease and unknowingly can pass it along to others. Identifying these so-called “silent spreaders” could help public health workers be more effective at contact tracing by identifying others who have been exposed and may require quarantine.
RECOMMENDED COVID-19 TEST FOR CAMPERS
THE BEST CHOICE: SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT PCR
Many COVID-19 tests are rapid antigen tests, which are statistically less accurate than RT-PCR tests. Recent reports also detail how these rapid tests can give false negative results (meaning you test negative but are actually infected), as well as false positive results (meaning you do not have the virus but test positive).
We strongly recommend choosing an RT-PCR COVID-19 test, whether that is through IGeneX or another lab.
